Testimonials About Women's Soccer Club

"I started with WSC when my now 3 and a half year old was only 3 months old. I showed up to a practice with tennis shoes and a 'cannot do attitude'. Afterwards, the way I felt and the fun that I had had was enough to keep me coming back for meore. I bought my first set of cleats and changed my 'cannot do attitude'. I love the excercise and I always impress the heck out of anybody when I tell them I play women's soccer."
Jennifer Kessenich -Blue Menace -O30 League A Division

"I love playing soccer and am so happy a club like the WSC exists. It provides me with a much needed stress relief and fun, but has also introduced me to great friends. After moving to Milwaukee, joining the WSC helped me make new and great friends and really helped Milwaukee feel like home."

April - Estate Open Premier A; Majors United -WPL

"With four kids (2 very active in sports and 2 young ones) and working for my own company out of the house, I don't have much time for myself. I tend to be driving a kid to a practice/game, taking care of another kid, house duties, working...WSC is a good escape for me. I forces me to set aside some time for me, to get a great workout in and see friends. Plus, it allows me to play the game that I love and have played since I was 6 years old. I love it!"
Becky Harju - Chili Peppers O30 League A Division

"I have been playing with WSC for 2 years and I consider it not only a place to play the game of soccer, but a social outlet and a drink from the fountain of youth! I am erergized by the healthy competition and the many WSC women that come from a variety of backgrounds, life situations and age levels. I look forward to game day not only for the workout and game of soccer, but for the camaraderie of the women that I play with (or against). WSC allows me to set a good example for my kids. They see mom playing a game that encourages team effort and a competitive spirit. They inquire whether we won or lost and how the game went. WSC helps me validate the time I took, for myself, to give them living proof the benefits of playing a sport."
Jenny Merrick - Kryptonite O25 Premier League; Top Gunners -Open League Division 1 B

"The more I think about why I simply enjoy the WSC, the more I realize how it really isn't that simple. It is really beneficial to me! I think, oh, it is because I love the game of soccer! Yes, I do! However, I have come to really appreciate the women I've met through the WSC. I appreciate being able to 'vent' a little to other moms who understand what I just went through with my children all day. I appreciate playing with 20 somethings who give me a completely new view on life...to remember the innocence. It is so healthy for me to physically, but even more so mentally! My husband is also glad that I play...it is an excellent stress relief!"
Katie Oberfoell  - Kryptonite O25 Premier League; Estate -Open League Premier A

"I thought after college, I would not be able to play soccer in a competitive league. When I moved back to MIlwaukee area to teach, one of my student's parents introduced me to the club.. At the time, I was playing at a level that was not the best fit, but after talking to Ginny, she found me a team that was a great match for me. I have been playing with people who are both younger and older than me. It gives me hope to continue playing for many more years! I have introduced many of my friends to the WSC who would all agree that it is just fun to still be able to play competitive soccer!"
Melissa Foshager -Arsenal O25 Premier League; Estate -Open League Premier A

"Milwaukee is very lucky to have the WSC. I don't know of many organizations that would embrace adult women to play soccer, even women who have never played before! The WSC works hard to provide a fun and safe environment for women to play soccer regardless of age, get to know each other and benefit the community through fundraising activities. I'm grateful I found WSC and hope to spend many more years playing soccer with them."
Kalai TaiHook - The Weeds O30 League B Division

"I love soccer, plain and simple. I’ve played soccer since the age of six, going through recreation, select, high school and college club leagues. Any chance that I get to play in a competitive, high level game is another opportunity for me to enjoy the game we all love so much. Although it is rooted in the game of soccer, the WSC has provided me a bit more in addition to what I expected. Since moving back to the area, the club has given me the opportunity to meet a multitude of very talented women, both on and off the field. I have come to cherish the weekly games that we have, along with the friendships that have been made during the past year. In addition, because the league does encourage people of all sporting backgrounds to join, it has given me an opportunity to mentor and guide others in the knowledge of the game that I have acquired through so many years of playing, which I have really enjoyed. Finally, I love the fact that it’s been another way I’ve been able to connect with my own family. My husband has “coached” several of our games, and because the open league allows ages 16 & up, I’ve actually been able to play some games with my younger sister, which is something I never thought I would get to do. The WSC has provided me a great experience with fantastic people. I highly recommend giving it a shot, whether you’ve been playing soccer your whole life or have never touched a soccer ball. If it seems intimidating, don’t worry. There are plenty of teammates around who will happily give you some coaching. Just ask, we love to share!"
Tara Gerstner -  Top Gunners -Open League Division 1 B; SWAT -O25 Premier League

"WSC has been a great way to keep up with my fitness over the yers. I've also really enjoyed getting to see women who never played before develop their skills over the seasons they play with us - you can see their confidence grow on and off the field. Our team has a large age range -30-56, so I've developed friendships and have learned a lot of varying ways to look at life as we continue our friendships on and off the field. Several of us have been on the same team for many years and have helped each other through the highs and lows of adulthood -marriages, children, not being able to have children divorces, and deaths of loved ones. The friends I play with on the field know me in a way that only a few other close friends know me and for that I am thankful that WSC was formed."
Sara Feider - Phoenix O30 League A Division

"Soccer has been for me a release. A way of letting off steam, exert some energy and let out frustration. It has given me a multitude of what I like to call 'white moments'. Those moments where time seems to stand still and everything seems perfect. Soccer has been a place where I have forged friendships that now span the Uited States. IT has helped me to become the person I am today and I would not change it. WSC has brought soccer back into my life. After 3 kids and 4 ankle surgeries I am able to play again and experience the joy I once knew. I had not played for 5 years and thought that I would never play again. Then I got an e-mail from an old teammate asking if I might be intersted in playing. IT was impossible to say no. I had to play and feel the exhilaration of running down the field and making that assist, scoring the goal or stopping the other team, feel that 'white mement' again. I did and brought some old friends into it with me. I have made a lot of new friends and have written to WSC many times thanking tem for the opportunity to play once more. I am lucky and blessed. I can still play. I have been playing in the Over 30 league, A division and working hard. It has been great. Thansk for the opportunity. I definitely plan on playing for many years to come."
Lisa Hollander - Chili Peppers O30 League A Division; Ajax -O25 Premier League

"Becoming a member of the WSC/WCI has been such a special experience for me.  After being away from Wisconsin for ten years, I was thrilled to move back and discover this wonderful club for women.  Every week I have two games to look forward to, where I can experience all of the emotions of the "beautiful game."  I have met so many fun, encouraging, enthusiastic women who impress me with their soccer skills and life stories.I find jogging around the neighborhood to be a bore, but always find chasing, passing and shooting a soccer ball to be a thrill. Not only has the soccer club given me a chance to fit fitness into my hectic schedule, I've also found some great friends! I am so thankful to have found this organization and all the wonderful people associated with it."
Shannon Jenik - Cosmos O30 League A Division; Falcons - Open League Division 1 B

"I first started playing soccer at age 52 with the urging of my 18 year old daughter, and I haven't looked back since! I have been exposed to so many things through being a part of WSC that I'd need alot more space than just a paragraph. The obvious ones are getting exercise, meeting new people, learning a new sport, being part of a team, etc, etc. But the things that are less obvious are the emotional/personal ones such as being made to feel a needed part of a team of women you don't even know, being appreciated for your time/talent/devotion to something you're all just learning to do, crying off the field after a game and being helped through it by women you just met, a sense of belonging to something for who you are/just as you are, being respected for your knowledge of the game even though you're just learning yourself. Women of all backgrounds are welcome at WSC, and I've seen firsthand what power can come of this----not just power on the soccer field, but power on the field of life:)"
Carmen Berte -  Swarm O30 League C Division

"Thank God for WSC!  I truly mean it.  As many women in the league I played soccer through out high school and into my late 20’s.  I stopped playing when I was 3 months pregnant with my first son.  I just assumed I was done.  9 years later, when he started playing I realized how much I missed the game.  I started calling around to find a women’s league, that is when I found WSC and have been playing ever since.  I so missed the game but even more the camaraderie of the women who play.  It’s not just the exercise or stress relief it is also the networking and relationships you get out of it.  We have doctors, lawyers, teachers, and just moms on our team.  It’s great to have a large resource of contacts to go to with questions, concerns or simple insight.  I love how the league rally’s around people in need.  Women who have gotten hurt while playing the game, raising money for a playground, or supporting other members for runs and marathons.  Many people are surprised that I still play soccer, but I am more amazed when they ask how they can join.  I recommend WSC to every women who played, who wants to play, or is looking for a new way to get in shape.  I love it!"
Julie Davies- Velocity O30 League B Division

"WSC has changed my world -- ok, that's sappy cliche, but there is truth to it.  Before I joined the club, the thought of being part of a sports program seemed ridiculous.  The closest I came to team sports was an occasional church volleyball game.  It was classic mid-life crisis...I turned 40 and I wanted to play soccer.  Where does someone who had never played find a spot on a team.   I heard about about WSC by accident.  Stepping out on the pitch for the first time was scary.  I knew no one.  My first team was a group of strays.  By the end of the session it was like we had been friends since U-6!   Now years later with a new level of confidence, I am doing so many more things I would have never had the nerve to try, mostly by the prompting of the women I play soccer with.  They are PhD's, baristas, SAH moms, business owners, cops, VP's, the list goes on...all of them incredible in their own way.  Adversaries on the pitch, friends when the buzzer sounds the last second of the game.  Over beers there is the usual recap of the game, but then it continues into the camaraderie only found when we women gather with our friends.  That is why WSC is different from your usual co-ed soccer leagues..."

"I have played soccer for over 15 years now from the East Coast to the Midwest and I can honestly say there are very few clubs that can parallel what WSC/WCI offers.  The variety of competitive levels year round coupled with a club approach to support its players as well as one’s community is hard to come by.  I moved to Milwaukee almost two years ago and started playing soccer with WSC/WCI shortly after.  In the short time I have played with the club, I have played with and against some very amazing and inspiring women.  That starts from the top down, hats off to Ginny McCullough and everyone else who have laboriously kept this club going.  I urge anyone interested in playing soccer, no matter the level, to check out WSC/WCI.  You will gain not only the experience of great play, but a welcoming community of new friends."
Casey Shearing -Phoenix O30 League A Division; Ajax -O25 Premier League

"I played club soccer growing up and was varsity all four years in highschool until my senior year when an injury brought all of that to an end.  I went almost 8 years without touching a soccer ball, but I missed the sport.  So when a friend asked me to join the WSC I was excited at the chance to see if I could play once again.  I knew that this would be a great chance to get back into the game competitively and that I would get a great work out.  What I was not anticipating was the incredible community of women that I would meet.  I am honored to be a part of such a great organization."
Leanne Field - Top Gunners -Open League Division 1 B; O25 Premier League

"I have been a WSC member for over 3 years and I am proud to be a soccer addict to the fullest extent!  Soccer has been a passion of mine from the moment I stepped on the field when I was 6 years old.  I played soccer throughout my youth, but as an adult I struggled to find the right team or league.  I was so excited when an acquaintance told me about the WSC.  I signed up right away and have enjoyed every moment since!  Playing in the WSC helped me rediscover my love of soccer and I’ve even been inspired to become a coach so I can share my passion with others.  The WSC has brought a lot of fun and friendships into my life."
Missie Braaten-Krueger - ProStep O30 League B Division

"The Women's Soccer Club has provided a great opportunity for me to continue to play soccer at a competitive level. Everyone at the club always brings their best effort to each game, while still having a great time. I look forward to continue to be a part of the Women's Soccer Club in the years to come."
